어릴 적 참치잡이 원양어선을 소재로 한 티브이 단막극을 봤었다. 어부들은 자신의 몸뚱이보다 큰 참치를 잡다 다치고 죽었다. ‘만선’은 영화에서 반복해서 들리는 단어였다. 누군가의 아빠, 남편인 남자들은 커다란 물고기를 쇳덩이 지하 창고에 가득 채워 넣기 위해 멈추지 않고 일했다. 바로 옆 동료가 사고로 없어지면 ‘만선’을 주문처럼 주절거렸다. 배가 가득 찼다는 뜻의 만선, 풍요로움을 말하고 있지만, 망망대해 위 한가운데 작은 배, 냉동창고에서 동사한 어부, 동그란 눈으로 해머를 맞는 물고기 등의 이미지가 나의 만선에는 덧씌워 있다.
나에게 만선은 그래서 풍요로움의 달콤함보다는 그 성취에 이르기 위한 어른의 피와 땀을 떠 올린다. 지난 몇 년간 기계와 건물을 그려 만선을 위해 일했던 내 할아버지 아버지 세대를 보이려 했다. 쇳덩이 기계의 녹슨 날카로움과 삭은 콘크리트 더미의 거칠함은 그들이 이룬 성취의 질감 같았다. 2021년, 지난 몇 년간 잡았던 크고 작은 작업을 늘어놨다.
작가노트 <만선 滿船 Full Ship> 2021
When I was young, I saw a TV one-act play about tuna fishing on deep-sea fishing boats. Fishermen were injured and killed if they caught tuna larger than their body size. 'Full ship' was a word heard over and over in the movie. Men who are someone's father and husband worked tirelessly to stuff a large fish into an underground warehouse. When the colleague next to him disappeared in an accident, he muttered the word 'full ship' as if spellbound. It means "full,'" but for me it overlaps with the images of a small boat in the middle of the vast ocean, a frozen fisherman in a frozen warehouse, and a fish being hammered with its round eyes.
For me, "Full Ship" reminds me of the blood and sweat of adults to achieve it, rather than the sweetness of abundance. I tried to represent the generation of my grandfather and father who worked at Full Ship in recent years by drawing machines and buildings. The rusty sharpness of the iron machine and the roughness of the pile of hardened concrete were like the texture of their achievements. In 2021, I would like to present the large and small works of the past years together with this exhibition.
