갤러리조은은 전속작가 성률(b. 1994)​의 개인전 《Cloud 9》을 오는 8월 20일부터 9월 19일까지 개최한다. 이번 전시는 성률이 지속적으로 탐구해 온 기억과 시간, 성장, 그리고 흘러가 버리는 순간에 대한 감각을 최근작을 통해 집중적으로 조명한다.

성률은 한국예술종합학교에서 애니메이션을 전공했다. 2022년 《여름 안에서 (In Summer)》로 일본 국제만화상 대상을 수상했으며, 이후 장면을 구성하고 이미지를 통해 이야기를 전달해 온 경험을 회화적 언어로 확장하며 자신만의 독자적인 작품 세계를 구축해 왔다.

봉준호 감독이 바라본 성률의 ‘조용히 움직이는 그림’
이번 개인전을 맞아 영화감독 봉준호는 전시 도록에 성률의 작품에 대한 자신의 시선을 글로 풀어냈다. 봉준호 감독은 성률의 회화를 처음 마주했을 때 느껴지는 섬세한 아름다움과 함께, 그 이면에 자리한 설명하기 어려운 ‘미묘한 불안감’​에 주목한다. 눈부신 햇살과 뭉게구름, 아이들, 고양이와 골목은 아름답지만, 동시에 이미 사라져 버렸거나 곧 사라질 것처럼 느껴진다는 것이다.

특히 봉준호 감독은 성률의 그림을 바라보면 “화면 속 모든 것이 조용히 움직이고 있는 듯한 느낌”​을 받는다고 말한다. 햇살이 조금씩 이동하고, 운동장 골대의 그림자가 미세하게 길어지며, 바람 없는 날에도 나뭇잎의 그림자가 아주 조금 흔들리는 듯한 감각이다. 이러한 미세한 움직임의 착시는 성률의 그림 안에서 아름다움과 불안, 현재와 과거가 공존하는 독특한 감각​을 만들어낸다.

봉준호 감독은 글의 마지막을 다음과 같이 맺는다.
“2026년, 파란 하늘에 흰 뭉게구름을 보면 사람들은 성률의 그림을 떠올리게 될 것이다.”

‘성장’을 그리는 화가
성률의 작품은 푸른 하늘과 거대한 흰 구름, 눈부신 햇빛 때문에 흔히 ‘여름의 그림’​으로 인식된다. 그러나 부산시립미술관 정종효 학예연구실장은 성률의 회화를 단순한 여름 풍경이 아닌 ‘성장에 관한 그림’​으로 바라본다. 정종효 학예연구실장은 성률에게 여름은 하나의 계절이라기보다 생명력이 가장 왕성한 순간이자 인간의 성장을 상징하는 시간이라고 설명한다. 거대한 구름은 끊임없이 흘러가는 시간을 의미하고, 빛은 기억을 다시 불러오는 매개가 된다. 결국 성률이 그리고 있는 것은 풍경 그 자체라기보다 시간과 기억, 그리고 성장의 과정​에 가깝다.

《Cloud 9》: 행복과 기억, 그리고 흘러가는 순간
전시 제목《Cloud 9》은 구름 위에 떠 있는 듯한 황홀함, 즉 더없이 행복한 상태를 뜻한다. 그러나 성률의 작품에서 행복은 거대하거나 극적인 사건의 모습으로 등장하지 않는다. 오히려 당시에는 너무 평범해 미처 알아차리지 못했지만, 시간이 지나고 나서야 소중했음을 깨닫게 되는 순간에 가깝다. 성률은 2025년 작가노트에서 ‘기분이 좋아지는 순간들’​에 대해 이야기하는 동시에, 그 순간들이 언젠가는 지나가 버릴 것임을 느낀다고 말한다. 그리고 그렇게 흘러가는 시간 속에서 서로를 아끼고 기억하는 것이 어쩌면 삶이 아닐까 질문한다.

성률에게 그림을 그리는 행위는 그렇게 지나가는 순간을 붙잡아 두는 방식이다. 작품 표면에 물을 뿌리고 물감을 풀어 자연스럽게 번지도록 하는 과정에서 생겨나는 색의 농담과 흔적 역시 시간의 흐름을 떠올리게 한다. 가가 말하듯, 우리의 삶이 계속 흘러가다 언젠가 어디론가 사라진다 해도, 모든 순간이 반드시 흔적을 남기듯”
그는 그 흔적들을 화면 위에 남긴다.

따라서 《Cloud 9》은 행복했던 순간에 대한 기억인 동시에, 사라지는 순간을 붙잡고 간직하고 기억하고자 하는 인간의 마음에 관한 이야기이기도 하다.

성률은 아크릴 과슈를 사용해 얇고 투명한 색을 여러 겹 쌓아 올린다. 물감이 마르는 과정에서 자연스럽게 만들어지는 경계와 흔적을 지우기보다 그대로 받아들이며, 중첩된 색을 통해 공기와 시간의 깊이를 만들어낸다. 가는 풍경 자체를 그리는 것이 아니라, 그 풍경 속에 존재하는 ‘공기’를 그리고 싶다​고 말한다.

“세상을 여행하기 시작하는 그림”
갤러리조은 조인숙 대표는 성률의 작품에 대해 다음과 같이 말한다. 처음 성률의 작품을 만났을 때 익숙한 풍경을 그리고 있음에도 기존 미술의 장르 안에서 어디에 속하는 작품인지 쉽게 규정하기 어려웠습니다. 그러나 바로 그 낯섦에서 성률만의 회화적 언어가 시작되었고, 지금은 그 언어를 바탕으로 자신만의 독특한 장르를 만들어가고 있다고 생각합니다.”
이어 조 대표는, 성률 작가는 자신의 그림들이 전 세계를 자유롭게 여행했으면 좋겠다고 말합니다. 앞으로 그의 작품들이 더 넓은 세상으로 나아가 다양한 사람들을 만나고, 그 안에서 새로운 의미와 가치를 만들어가는 모습을 기대하고 있습니다.”라고 덧붙였다.

《Cloud 9》은 지금까지 성률이 구축해 온 회화 세계를 집약적으로 보여주는 전시인 동시에, 한 작가의 그림이 더 넓은 세계를 향해 본격적인 여행을 시작하는 순간을 기록하는 전시이기도 하다. 관람객은 작품 속에서 작가 개인의 이야기를 찾기보다, 자신이 지나온 어느 여름날과 어떤 장소, 한때 사랑했던 사람, 그리고 이미 사라져 버린 순간들을 떠올리게 된다.
그 순간 성률의 풍경은 더 이상 작가 개인의 기억 속에 머물지 않는다.
그의 그림을 마주하는 각자의 기억이자, 각자의 풍경이 된다.

Gallery Joeun presents 《Cloud 9》, a solo exhibition by its represented artist Seong Ryul (b. 1994), from August 20 to September 19. Through recent works, the exhibition offers a focused look at the artist’s ongoing exploration of memory, time, growth, and the sensation of moments slipping away.

Seong Ryul studied animation at the Korea National University of Arts. In 2022, he received the Grand Prize at the Japan International MANGA Award for 《In Summer》. Since then, he has translated his experience in composing scenes and conveying narratives through images into a painterly language, developing a distinctive body of work.

Bong Joon Ho on Seong Ryul’s “Quietly Moving” Paintings
For this solo exhibition, filmmaker Bong Joon Ho contributed an essay to the exhibition catalogue, sharing his perspective on Seong Ryul’s work. Bong Joon Ho draws attention to the delicate beauty of Seong Ryul’s paintings upon first encounter, as well as the difficult-to-explain “subtle sense of unease” that lies beneath them. The dazzling sunlight, billowing clouds, children, cats, and alleyways are beautiful, yet at the same time they seem as though they have already disappeared or are about to disappear.

In particular, Bong Joon Ho describes having “the feeling that everything is quietly moving” when looking at Seong Ryul’s paintings. It is as though the sunlight is slowly shifting, the shadow of a goalpost on a playground is lengthening almost imperceptibly, and the shadows of leaves on a windless day are trembling ever so slightly. This illusion of subtle movement creates a distinctive sensation within Seong Ryul’s paintings, where beauty and unease, the present and the past, coexist.

At the end of his essay, Bong writes:
“In 2026, when people see white cumulus clouds against a blue sky, they will think of Seong Ryul’s paintings.”

A Painter of “Growth”
Seong Ryul’s works are often perceived as “paintings of summer” because of their blue skies, immense white clouds, and dazzling sunlight. However, Cheong Jong Hyo, Chief Curator of the Busan Museum of Art, views Seong Ryul’s paintings not simply as summer landscapes but as “paintings about growth.” Cheong explains that, for Seong Ryul, summer is less a season than a moment when life is at its most vigorous—a period that symbolizes human growth. The immense clouds signify time in constant flux, while light serves as a medium through which memories are recalled. Ultimately, what Seong Ryul paints is not so much the landscape itself as the process of time, memory, and growth.

《Cloud 9》: Happiness, Memory, and Moments Slipping Away
The exhibition title 《Cloud 9》 refers to a state of complete happiness, a sense of euphoria as though floating above the clouds. In Seong Ryul’s work, however, happiness does not appear as a spectacular or dramatic event. Rather, it is closer to a moment that seemed too ordinary to notice at the time, only to be recognized as precious after it has passed. In his 2025 artist statement, Seong Ryul writes of “moments that make me feel good,” while at the same time sensing that those moments will eventually pass. He also suggests that perhaps life is about caring for and remembering one another amid that flow.

For Seong Ryul, painting is a way of holding on to such passing moments. The tonal variations and traces that emerge as he sprays water onto the surface, loosens the paint, and allows it to blend naturally also evoke the passage of time. As the artist writes, “even if our lives flow onward and eventually disappear somewhere, just as every moment inevitably leaves a trace,” he leaves those traces within his work.

《Cloud 9》 is therefore both a memory of moments of happiness and a story about the human impulse to hold on to, preserve, and recall those moments.

Seong Ryul uses acrylic gouache, building up multiple layers of thin, translucent color. Rather than removing the boundaries and traces that emerge naturally as the paint dries, he accepts them as part of the painting, creating a sense of depth in both air and time through accumulated layers of color. The artist says that rather than painting the landscape itself, he wants to paint the “air” that exists within it.

“Paintings Beginning to Travel the World”
Jo In Sook, Director of Gallery Joeun, says, “When I first encountered Seong Ryul’s work, I was struck by the familiarity of the landscapes he depicted, yet it was difficult to determine where his work belonged within the established genres of art. Yet it was precisely this unfamiliarity that gave rise to Seong Ryul’s own painterly language, and today, based on that language, he is creating a distinctive genre of his own.”
She adds, “Seong Ryul says he hopes his paintings will travel freely throughout the world. I look forward to seeing his works reach a wider world, encounter diverse people, and create new meanings and values along the way.”

《Cloud 9》 offers a concentrated view of the pictorial world Seong Ryul has built to date, while also documenting the moment when an artist’s paintings begin their journey in earnest toward a wider world. Rather than searching for the artist’s own story within the works, viewers are led to recall a summer day or place from their own past, someone they once loved, and moments that have already disappeared. At that point, Seong Ryul’s landscapes no longer remain solely within the artist’s personal memories but become landscapes belonging to each person who encounters them.
