조원재는 찰나의 물방울 형상 속에 물과 돌의 상반된 물성을 공존시키며, 시간성과 감각을 응축하는 작업을 지속하고 있다. 끊임없이 변화하고 순환하는 물과, 시간이 응축되어 암석화된 돌의 특성은 그의 작업 속에서 대비되면서도 연결되며 순간과 영원을 잇는 시각적 고리가 된다. 작가는 점토로 물방울을 빚고, 회전하는 물레 위에서 반복적으로 점을 새기는 과정을 통해 지나간 시간의 궤적을 새긴다. 이어 연마를 통해 드러난 빛과 색은 생의 내밀한 감정을 응축해 담아내며, 그렇게 완성된 물방울은 찰나이자 흐름, 동시에 영원으로서 지금 이 순간의 감각을 일깨운다.
작가는 ‘색채가 만들어내는 감각적 울림’이라는 의미의 ‘백색유희(百色遊戱)’를 조형 언어로 삼아 색, 질감, 시간의 층위를 도자라는 물성에 조화롭게 녹여낸다. 한국예술종합학교에서 학사 및 석사 과정을 마쳤으며, IAC(국제도예아카데미), 한국도자재단, 잉거도자박물관(대만) 등에 작품이 소장되어 있다.
2024년 익산한국공예대전 우수상, 2020년 동일 대회 대상, 2017년 경기세계도자비엔날레 금상, 2016년 대만국제도자비엔날레 입선 등 다양한 수상 경력을 보유하고 있으며, 한국, 일본, 홍콩, 영국, 독일, 대만 등 국내외에서 꾸준한 전시 활동을 이어가고 있다.
Jo Won Jae visualizes temporality through the fleeting form of a water droplet, where the materiality of water and stone coexist. The contrast between water—constantly flowing and shifting—and stone—formed over time into solid permanence—becomes a visual metaphor connecting the momentary and the eternal. By sculpting droplet forms from clay and inscribing countless dots on a spinning wheel, Jo traces the passage of time. Through meticulous polishing, layers of light and color emerge, encapsulating personal and emotional moments. These droplets become sensations of flow, stillness, and timeless presence—an awakening to the irretrievable "now."
Central to Jo’s practice is Baeksaek Yuhee (百色遊戱), meaning “a sensory resonance created by color,” which serves as a sculptural language uniting color, texture, and time within the physicality of clay. She earned both her BFA and MFA from the Korea National University of Arts, and her works are held in collections including the International Academy of Ceramics (IAC), Korea Ceramic Foundation, and Yanggu Ceramic Museum in Taiwan.
Jo has received numerous awards, including the 2024 Excellence Award and 2020 Grand Prize from the Iksan Korea Craft Competition, the 2017 Grand Prize at the Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale, and was a 2016 Finalist at the Taiwan International Ceramic Biennale. Her work has been steadily exhibited in Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, the UK, Germany, and Taiwan.

나는 오랜 시간 물레로 흙을 다뤄왔다. 물레 성형은 회전하는 흙의 면면을 이해하고 통제하는 예민한 감각을 익히기 위해서는 끝없는 반복과 수련이 필요하다. 나는 그 과정을 지속하면서 살아있는 흙의 물성과 가마에서 나온 도자의 물질적 가능성을 탐구해, 단순한 반복을 넘어 형태감과 색, 질감을 통해 살아 있음을 감각하게 하는 차이를 만들고자 시도해 왔다.
이러한 마음가짐으로 도자의 역사적 맥락을 나름의 해석을 통해 이해하는 과정을 거쳐, 현재는 물레 성형을 기반으로 시간을 자연의 모습으로 시각화하는 조형 작업을 이어가고 있다.
흙은 물레 위에 오르면 멈추지 않고 회전한다. 내 두 손과 눈은 그 움직임을 따라가며 세세한 부분을 감각하고, 나는 흙의 흐름 속에 공존한다. 마침내 덩어리였던 흙이 머릿속 형상으로 구현되면, 그제야 멈춰 눈앞의 순간을 응시한다. 그리고 고온의 소성을 거쳐 흙의 시간은 한순간으로 응집되어 영원히 고정된다. 그렇게 순간은 시공간 속에 자리를 잡는다.
물레 위의 흙이 순간을 응집하듯, 자연 또한 찰나의 장면을 드러낸다. 그 가운데 내가 주목한 것은 물의 순환 속에서 나타나는 이슬이다. 새벽 산책길에서 우연히 발견한 이슬이 되돌아오는 길에 사라진 장면을 단서로 삼아, 나는 물레의 회전력을 자연의 에너지 순환에 은유하며 사유를 넓혔다.
생명은 성장하고, 물은 끊임없이 움직이며, 가라앉은 침전물은 압력을 받아 돌이 된다. 나는 물, 흙, 돌, 식물, 바람 등 자연 요소에서 감지되는 시간의 리듬을 관찰하며 흙의 방식으로 형상화하고자 했다. 이를 통해 나의 인간적 노력은 자연의 모습으로 드러나며 그 안에 자리한다.
완성된 작품은 순간과 영원, 그리고 시간의 흐름이 함께 머물며, 숫자로는 규정할 수 없는 반복과 변화, 그리고 어느새 드러나는 순간의 감각을 만들어낸다.
그렇게 나의 방식으로, 한때 지금이었던 매순간이 모여 만들어낸 또 하나의 지금을 마주한다.

For many years, I have worked with clay on the potter’s wheel. Mastering wheel-throwing requires endless repetition and training, for it demands a delicate sensitivity to understand and control the rotating surface of clay. Through this continual practice, I have explored the materiality of living clay and the potential of fired ceramics, seeking to move beyond mere repetition and to create subtle differences that allow form, color, and texture to convey a sense of life.
With this mindset, I have also sought to interpret the historical context of ceramics in my own way. Today, I continue to develop wheel-based works that visualize time through the forms of nature.
Once placed on the wheel, clay spins without pause. My hands and eyes follow its movement, perceiving its finest details, and within that flow I coexist with the clay. At last, when the lump of clay takes shape in alignment with the image in my mind, the wheel stops and I gaze upon the moment before me. After the high firing, clay’s temporal flow condenses into a single instant—fixed forever. In this way, each moment finds its place in space and time.
Just as clay on the wheel compresses the moment, nature too reveals fleeting scenes. Among them, I was drawn to dew, discovered on an early morning walk yet gone by the time I returned. This ephemeral encounter became a clue, leading me to expand my reflections—where the rotation of the wheel came to embody the cyclical energy of nature.
Life grows, water is ever-moving, and sediment pressed over time hardens into stone. Observing such rhythms of time within water, earth, stone, plants, and wind, I have sought to embody them through clay. In this way, my human endeavor emerges as an echo of nature itself.
The completed works hold together the moment and the eternal, the flow of time and its suspension. They generate sensations of repetition and transformation that cannot be measured in numbers, and of moments that suddenly appear and reveal themselves.
Thus, through my practice, I encounter yet another “now”—formed by the accumulation of countless moments that were once the present.
